Saxophone, trumpet, and vocals
James M. "Sandy" Houser was born and raised in Knoxville, TN and graduated from South High School in 1963. Shortly after leaving the band in 1965, Sandy married his sweetheart, Carol. They have one son and three grandchildren. He joined the Navy in 1966 and was released early, in 1969, to care for his terminally ill father.
During his stint with the Navy, he was assigned to Memphis where he attended technical schools. He did one cruise with his squadron, RVAH-5, aboard the U.S.S. Constellation to the Gulf of Tonkien (can you say Vietnam?)
After being released from the Navy, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in the School of Engineering. He graduated in 1974 with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His work history includes working for Leeds and Northrup in sales, Russell and Axon Engineers, United Engineers, and Alstom Power as a Controls/Electrical engineer. He is also licensed as a Professional Engineer in several states. He retired from full time work at the end of 2010 and presently does part time work for a local consulting firm.
Except for his time in the Navy, he has always lived in Knoxville. Due to his work, he and his wife have done extensive traveling both here and abroad. He is currently very active in church related interests including singing in the choir and men's ensemble, mentoring men discipleship, and nursery work. Sandy showed his versatility in the band by playing saxophone and trumpet, and performing vocals.
